It’s a not a title that inspires too much awe or appreciation most of the time, but an important one nonetheless. Where would a flock be without a leader to guide them, protect them, nurture them? To help them grow and prosper? It’s not an easy job. Sometimes, it’s close to impossible.
Before he left this world, Jesus told Peter to care for his flock. It would be a haughty man that would think he could do as well as our Lord. But it wasn’t for love of his fellow man that Peter was asked to put himself forth. Jesus asked Peter not if he loved his neighbor, but if he loved Him. Three times Jesus asked, and three times Peter replied that of course he loved his Lord. Jesus’ instructions were the same each time: Feed my sheep.
And so the Good Shepherd makes shepherds of his disciples. But it would be foolish to think that we never stumble. Never falter. Never fail. I carry the title. I wear it proudly, even when I make mistakes. I believe those mistakes are a chance to learn to be better. So that I can care more aptly for my flock. However big or small it may be.
Because that is my job, it is what I am called to do. I am a Shepherd. I feed His sheep.
I am not Shepherd Book, nor am I Ron Glass. This is a role playing journal for we_coexist, I am in fact, just keleos.
